Polisport Group has 100 bicycles to offer to day care centres

Concerning the celebrations of World Car-Free Day, Polisport and Portuguese Cycling Federation come together to promote national wide, among the youngest, the cycling practice. As part of Mobility European Week 2021, Polisport Group wanted to highlight this date by enhancing bicycle as a mean of transport increasingly recurrent and safe in a context of active mobility.

We believe that if from one side using bicycle as a mean of transport is dependent on several factors such as travelled distance, available time for commuting, as well as available infrastructures, knowing how to ride a bicycle is something that needs to be widely worked in Portugal. The government initiatives recently launched under the National Strategy for Cycling Active Mobility, or the "Portugal a Pedalar 15x mais" (Portugal Cycling 15x more) highlight this importance and reveal the still small numbers of bicycle use in Portugal.

Also, in a carried study out by the Portuguese Cycling Federation in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region, over 50% of the 1st cycle students who took part in the practical screening to assess their skills did not know how to ride a bicycle. Having contact with bicycle since an early age is one of the main factors to develop cycling as a sport, as a Portuguese recurring practice.

It is in this context that we intend to promote this practice among the younger generation, offering 100 balance bikesto Portugal pre-school institutions, whether private or public. This action will enable hundreds of children, at a school context, learn the necessary skills to know how to ride a bicycle from an early age (from 2 years old), namely the balance

Once these skills are acquired, children can easily learn to ride a conventional bicycle, avoiding the use of the traditional "wheels", a method still used by many, but which is incorrect for the learning process, being inadvisable as it does not contribute to improving balance.

Active mobility and micro-mobility are strategic vectors of action in the Road Map of the Polisport Group, so it is with great affection and appreciation that we launch this campaign together with the Portuguese Cycling Federation that will enable 50 institutions to have at least two learning bicycles in the classroom.
