La rúbrica Humans of Cycling tiene como objetivo contar la historia de los entusiastas del ciclismo.

Made by bike enthusiasts for bike enthusiasts, we are commited to showing the behind the scenes of their best moments, their sacrifices and daily life.

Today we have Gonçalo Amado, portuguese athlete that is going to share a bit of her story with us.

When did you started riding a bicycle?
At 6 years old. I started on a school of road cycling. Meanwhile also started on BTT with my father.

How was your first bicycle?

My first bicycle was a 24’wheel BTT model that my father made me, it was yellow, I do not even know the brand name… The road bicycle was a Mendiz 26’ wheel.

So, your father was the biggest boost for you to be connected to cycling.
Yes, definitely.

And there was something he said? That stimulated you for cycling?
He always gave freedom to choose what I prefer. When I was young, I did soccer, and other sports.

Do you prefer competition, or a simple bike tour by the beach?
Competition for sure.

What is so special about competition?

I have been competing since I was six years old… I love competition’s spirit. Is something that motivates me and makes want to train more.

What was the best experience in cycling?

Was the 12th XCO Europe Championship and the World Championship Sub-23, where I finished in 18th place, being a part of the best twenty.

And something funny that happened to you?
I went through a remarkable experience on Taça de Portugal. On my 3rd lap I broke my chain, I almost finished bottom but I achieved to recover and win the race.

And there was something he said? That stimulated you for cycling?

He always gave freedom to choose what I prefer. When I was young, I did soccer, and other sports.

Do you prefer competition, or a simple bike tour by the beach?
Competition for sure.

And the worst moment?
It was my knee injurie. Three years ago. I have been without riding for three months.

Sometimes, when we go through those injuries, we came up to be afraid of being active again. What was your biggest motivation?
I motivate myself every day. I have some references, but I can motivate me. I knew what I was capable of, I had a national championship where I, fortunately, won. In that year I was completely focus; I had lost half of the season due to my injury, so, reach the national championship and win, was truly good.

What was the biggest learning you get by riding?

When you ride a bicycle, you are always learning...

But what it the greater? The one you always remember?

The spirit. The friendly spirit, the competition spirit…

Do you think that that kind of spirit does is not present on other sports?
The only sport that I practiced without being BTT, was soccer. But it cannot be compared. Neither to BTT nor Cycling.

What is the biggest difference?
Is something that I do ever since I was a child. I cannot imagine myself practicing other sport. I truly cannot.

Finally: why do you like cycling?
I started my childhood on a bike, with my father… I love riding on road, BTT… It is indescribable!
