Jimmy Wicksell Wins First Ever Honda Xtreme Academy Nordic Challenge
The event, which brought together 12-16 year old CRF150R riders from across the Nordic region, saw some incredible racing between the young fourstroke racers, although it was 14-year-old Wicksell who took the overall victory with his 2-1 scorecard.

In the first heat 13-year-old Norwegian rider Christian Granbakken soon took to the front with his smooth style and a good lead to easily take the race win; a detrimental blow to the Swedish racers whom were looking to dominate this special all-Honda race. Wicksell finished second after battling hard with fellow countryman Alvin Östlund.

In the second race Granbakken, Wicksell and Östlund again were battling early on in the race when Granbakken made a mistake o n the sandy Varberg track and went down. The Norwegian racer remounted in 12th place, but although he easily carved his way through the field to third, he realised he would be unable to make an impression on the leaders and concentrated on bringing his CRF150R machine home in a safe third position. Wicksell controlled the race from the front after battling with Östlund, who was close behind, to take the overall win of the first ever Xtreme Academy Nordic Challenge and was awarded the top prize of a 1,000 Euro in Honda vouchers as well as a brand new Airoh Aviator helmet.

Other notable performances were top Swedish lady youngster, Emelie Dahl who was holding her own in fourth place in the first heat when a small tumble meant she was demoted to 10th place. Emelie posted a 13th place finish in race two taking eighth overall. Danish B rider Lucas Ankjćr also put on a good performance to take a top-ten overall finish.

Racers were treated to a talk with former Grand Prix winner and Xtreme Academy trainer Brian Jorgensen, who was on hand throughout the day to help the riders and answer their questions. Prior to the races Brian gave the youngsters some tips on racing the particular track conditions and race craft for the long 20-minute plus two-lap motos.

The Honda Xtreme Academy Nordic challenge was an undoubted success with parents and riders enjoying the opportunity to race in an international environment specifically tailored for the development of Honda CRF150R riders. The Xtreme Academy Championships, which run with the main national series’ in five countries across Europe, are gaining in popularity and this weekend will see the opening rounds of the Swedish and Irish championships take place. Jimmy Wicksell – Xtreme Academy Nordic Challenge winner
“It’s been really fun to be part of this race with only CRF150R bikes and riders from all over the Nordic area. In the first heat I took the holeshot and the Norwegian guy just passed me. I couldn’t follow him, he was just faster than me, and so I took second place, which is all I had. I was disappointed with my speed actually; I made some mistakes and I couldn’t follow him. In the second heat I got a good start again. I didn’t have any problems at all with the second place guy. People say he was all over me but I didn’t notice he was there and I controlled the race from the front. I was a little bit tired from the long races but it was a good day. I was very motivated and I’m really happy to have won the first ever Xtreme Academy Nordic Challenge.”

Roger Harvey: Honda Motor Europe Off-Road Manager
“This has been a really successful and exciting event for the Nordic CRF150R racers. It was great to be able to bring the Honda family of youngsters together into one race on similar machinery with an international feel, as riders from all over the Nordic region competed for both themselves and their countries. The Xtreme Academy programme is about us giving something back to the sport and finding ways of helping these youngsters develop, especially as some of these racers are the stars of the future. The Nordic Challenge is part of this development, and even in its first year it has created a lot of excitement with the young racers - it was certainly great to see so many CRF150R riders on the line. It was also good that Brian Jorgensen was on hand to help out. He has been working with the riders across Europe and he was able to bring his knowledge and experience to this race too to help work with the riders and their race craft. The feedback from the parents and the riders has been great and it’s certainly been a huge success.”
