Traffic, cars and more cars, bus, rushed motorcyclists, pedestrians.
What about us, cyclists, how do we manage?
To ride a bike in traffic may seem impossible to many,
in particular to those living in the city. Is it real so? If that’s true, why
did the number of cyclists on the streets increased?
What’s true and what’s imagination about safety in
traffic?
Safety
in traffic is established from the numbers, statistics, found through
researches conducted on a scientific basis, that actually say what's safe,
unsafe or dangerous to the driver of a vehicle, pedestrian or any other people
in traffic.
The
rest is popular imagination (or fiction), and this yes, is usually dangerous.
The fact is that people cling to certain truths much more to avoid the
possibility of changes in their lives than for anything else. "If riding
is much safer than I imagine, I'll have to assume I was wrong all this time.
What is new is strange and brings fears. For those
riding in traffic for the first time the situation may seem scary. We only
realize that most dangers are imaginary with familiarity and practice.
Traffic is predictable, logic and answers to physics. Is
there a psychological part? Yes, but it is also predictable.
Every accident is caused by an error, a failure. If
there are no errors or failures, there is no accident. Obviously, it seems a
meaningless statement, but it is not, quite the contrary. Those who understand
this truth understand what is safety in traffic and almost dissolve the
possibility of an accident.
Before blaming the other, find out what your
mistake is and you will find the solution to the conflict.
For the cyclist anywhere:
1. be polite
2. obey traffic laws
3. always sign
your intentions
4. wear white
or appealing clothes
5. keep reflectors clean
6. avoid busy streets
and avenues
7. keep on your
side of the road
8. don’t zig-zag: try to
ride in straight line
9. learn listen to
traffic
